Those of you who have ever successfully quit a habit or know someone who has (for example think of the energy required to quit smoking or drinking) know that to be successful, there is an element of mindfulness. There is a lot of meditation and quieting of the heart that is involved in letting go of a habit that satisfies a hormonal addiction (all these habits release hormones in your body that cause the brain to say ‘ahhhhhh’ – it is the source of addiction). In order to let go of a habit that makes your brain say ‘ahhhhhhh’, you need to be extremely mindful of the thing that was making your brain freak out in the first place.
When you feel the desperate ‘instinctual’ need to open the fridge or the cupboard for something to eat, take a moment and take a breath. Are you feeling anxious? Are you worried about something? Are you sad? Are you angry? If you stop to think about how your stomach is feeling – it’s probably not that hungry. There is something else that is driving you and you’re looking for the cure in the cupboard.
Today’s assignment: Every time you find yourself mindlessly reaching for food, breathe. Think. And WRITE DOWN what comes to mind. If you believe you are a person with emotional eating tendencies, you will fill up a small page with thoughts. You will find you have the same thoughts over and over. Write them down. I would love you to send me some of them. Really.
Write it down.
Then, please feel free to send them to me at firstname.lastname@example.org and if enough people respond, I will send them out (anonomously of course!!!) so you can see that you are not alone, but neither are you without the ability to finally make a really, really big change.
You are worth it.
You can do it!
